University of Dhaka
The Faculty of Law, University of Dhaka – the oldest of all law faculties in Bangladesh – started its journey in 1921. Now the Department of Law under this Faculty offers LLM in different fields, MPhil and PhD degrees alongside the basic undergrad LLB (Honours) degree. In its march of educating and disseminating legal knowledge among the peoples of Bangladesh, the faculty has been playing a cardinal role for almost a century. Over the years, the Faculty of law became the centre for excellence for legal education in Bangladesh and has been playing the role of guardian of legal education in Bangladesh through its enlightening trajectory dedicated to people of the land. The Faculty gave birth to some of the finest legal minds and jurists of the country who contribute in enriching the legal, social and political arenas in various ways. Its contribution in devising, strengthening and sensitizing the broader legal architecture of Bangladesh (both in terms of knowledge and expertise) is unparalleled. At present, the Faculty has 43 full time academics, of whom 24 are PhD holders, having excellent academic records, expertise and experience in different aspects and areas of laws. The Faculty has 20 professors all of whom received their degrees from world renowned law schools.
Role in ASILE
The University of Dhaka has a well-known faculty of law with a large expertise on refugee and migration law. The University of Dhaka thanks to their contacts at the national and international arena and precise overview of the national developments will contribute to ASILE with the linkages with the policy makers, CSOs and asylum seekers located in Bangladesh. University of Dhaka will be involved in WP1 – Inventory of Asylum Governance Instruments and Actors, concretely in Tasks 1.1, as well as in WP2 on Actors Networks (Task 2.1). Partner 9 will conduct a Country Report and a series of interviews at the national area with policy makers, Civil Society organization working in the country and asylum seekers.

Borhan Uddin Khan

Short biography
Dr. Borhan Uddin Khan is currently a Professor in the Department of Law, University of Dhaka and an Adjunct Professor, Department of Law, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Dr. Khan, is one of the founder members of the Asian Society of International Law. He is currently a member of its Board of Advisorsand a former Vice President (2013-2015). His areas of interest include: International Human Rights Law, International Humanitarian Law, Legislative Drafting and Codification of Laws. As consultant of the Ministry of Law Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Bangladesh, he codified the Laws of Bangladesh (1939-2005), published in 2007 as The Bangladesh Code (Vols. 9 to 36). His co-edited book Revisiting the Geneva Conventions: 1949-2019 (Brill Nijhoff, with Jahid Bhuiyan) is forthcoming in 2019. He recently received ‘The LSE Outstanding Alumni Volunteer Award’ (2016-2017) from the London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London.
Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman

Short biography
Dr. Muhammad Mahbubur Rahman is a Professor at the Department of Law, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh. He received his Ph.D. in criminal law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London in 2013. His research interests focus on criminal law, legal theories, human rights, and law and society. Muhammad Rahman is currently an elected member of the Executive Council of the Asian Society of International Law and serving as Treasurer of the Bangladesh Chapter of the Asian Society of International Law. He is the author of Criminal Sentencing in Bangladesh: From Colonial Legacies to Modernity (Leiden/Boston: Brill Nijhoff, 2017), and co-author of Protection of Minorities: Regimes, Norms and Issues in South Asia (Newcastle: Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2012), and Protection of Children in Conflict with the Law in Bangladesh (Dhaka: Save the Children UK, 2008).
