Newcastle University
Newcastle University is a leading University in the United Kingdom. It is a member of the prestigious Russell Group, was ranked 16th in the country for its research power in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, and has received the highest possible rating – Gold – in the most recent Teaching Excellence Framework. The University has a very successful history of participating in international research consortia and collaborations. It has participated in more than 50 Horizon2020 projects, which have together involved around 450 partner institutions from across Europe and beyond.
The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology (GPS) was formed in 2003. It combined three separate departments, each of which have a long history of teaching and research. Geography has been taught at Newcastle University since 1927, Politics for more than 50 years and Sociology for almost 40 years.
The Politics department at Newcastle is a diverse and friendly community of scholars and students, committed to world-leading research and excellent, innovative teaching across the widest possible range of specialist areas within the subject. It offers a wide choice of study options and a full schedule of academic and social activities. Every year, it produces articulate, confident graduates possessing the intellectual qualities and skills needed to succeed in their chosen careers.
Role in ASILE
The School of Geography, Politics and Sociology is a large and growing School, with the politics ‘unit’ alone having more than 30 permanent, full-time academic staff. The staff includes numerous colleagues who have relevant specialisms in gender, migration, and Middle East studies, all of which dovetail with Dr. Turner’s expertise and his participation in ASILE. The School also has experience of participating in numerous European-funded research projects. The School and University will therefore be able to offer a very supportive environment for Dr. Turner, and will be a valuable addition to the ASILE Consortium. The expertise of Dr. Turner on gender, vulnerability, work and labour market integration will be playing a key role under WP4 on Refugee Recognition, Self-reliance and Rights, engaging as well with field trips.

Short biography
Dr. Lewis Turner is Lecturer in International Politics of Gender at Newcastle University, UK. His research explores humanitarianism in the Middle East, particularly in Jordan, and focuses on themes including gender, vulnerability, working rights and labour market integration for refugees, and refugee encampment. His work has appeared in peer-review journals including International Feminist Journal of Politics, Review of International Studies, and Social Politics: International Studies in Gender, State and Society, and has received prizes from multiple professional associations, including the British International Studies Association, and the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies.
