Temporary Protection for Refugees: The Case
of Zimbabwe
The third ASILE Annual Conference started with a public event focusing on the Temporary Protection for Zimbabwean Refugees.
The event kicked-off with a keynote speach given by Ms Monique Ekoko (UNHCR Regional Representative (SAMCO)) on Complementary Pathways and the Global Compact on Refugees.
The meeting counted with the participation of academics, practitioners, students and key holders of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP), who actively engaged in the Panel discussion that took place after the keynote speech and offered a presentation from two key experts, Mr James Chapman (Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town) who spoke on the decision to advocate against the withdrawal of the ZEPs, and Advocate David Simonsz, who presented the legal argument to contest the withdrawal of the ZEPs.
The public event continued with the organization of a Task Force (by invitation only), which provided a roundtable discussion with Government focal persons, Civil society representatives, academia, holders of ZEP and the UNHCR. The format of the meeting allowed for a very open and frank discussion. Holders of ZEP had also the possibility to share their testimonies, obstacles and experiences. Furthermore, the participants had the possibility to gather in groups (divided by topics) and provide feedback and recommendations. This feedback was collected by the ASILE experts who will include them in their research.
